Sheila Burnam Obituary

A fighter and true embodiment of passion, wit, resilience, and boldness, Sheila Lezette Burnam left an everlasting imprint on those who knew her. After 68 years of enchanting our lives with her big laughs, hilarious hot takes, and moments of deep reflection, our beloved mother embarked on her final journey May 2, 2024.

Sheila was born in 1956 in East Orange, N.J., but raised in Newark. She graduated from Weequahic High School in 1973 and studied child psychology at Bloomfield College and Rutgers University.

From a young age, she had a willful spirit. Her outspokenness challenged many traditional expectations for girls of her generation. This quality often landed her in controversy as it led her to speak up for others and herself whenever she felt someone was unfairly treated. Not only that, but she was unafraid to challenge chauvinistic attitudes in her relationships with family and friends. Her gutsiness earned her the nickname "Tequila" growing up.

Sheila loved wholeheartedly, forgave readily making little distinction between family and friends. She opened her home and heart to anyone struggling with a job, mental health, grief, homelessness, and even addiction. Tirelessly, she guided others towards resources, offering encouragement and aid, even as she navigated her own hardships. Her compassion knew no bounds, fueling her unwavering support for those in need.

Sheila shared a lifelong passion for music with her devoted and loving husband of 45 years, Keith "Jerry" Burnam, Sr. A powerful vocalist, her soulful voice allowed her to compete in local competitions, join church choirs, and even hold the stage from the middle of her living room with family, friends, and neighbors.

One of her proudest musical achievements was joining the Grammy award-winning Newark-based Jubilation Choir, founded in 1998, which has the honor of being the last choir to perform with the legendary Ray Charles. Her stunning rendition of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" secured her spot as a charter Jubilator.

From 1987 to 1992, Sheila operated a profitable home daycare and aftercare business called Bibs and Cribs, Inc. In 1992, she was also instrumental in helping her daughter launch a community initiative “Taking It A Step Further: Helping the Homeless” which provided food to over 900 homeless families in East Orange, N.J.

Sheila was an exceptional mother who nurtured her children, Keith and Lisa, with unwavering love and support. She instilled in them the courage to dream boldly and pursue their aspirations relentlessly. With her guidance, they learned to always fight harder, never quit and rise above adversity. Sheila's home was a sanctuary filled with books, music, laughter, the comforting aromas of delicious meals, and the most colorful storytelling. Her nurturing spirit created an environment where her children and grandchildren could thrive and find solace, forever shaping their lives with cherished memories.

Sheila will be dearly missed by her husband, Keith Burnam Sr.; daughter Lisa Burnam; grandchildren Keith BurnamIII, Ezekiel McKenzie Burnam, Gadise Teklu, and Kidane Teklu; as well as daughter-in-law Syrena Burnam and son-in-law Tesfa Teklu. Her vibrant presence will leave an indelible void in the lives of her extended family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Towards the end of her life, Sheila battled numerous health issues that deepened over the years. Even during difficult times, she maintained a positive attitude and found reasons to laugh and be joyful. Sheila never let hardships define her. She lived life on her own terms and followed her own path, regardless of the obstacles.
