Sandra Olive Lang, known as Sandy, was a life-long resident of Montclair, New Jersey. She died on November 10, 2022 at the age of 79.
A graduate of Montclair High School where she was a member of the dance team, she went on to play an instrumental role in many of the town’s civic and social organizations.
Sandy received her undergraduate degree from Hampton University where, following in her mother’s footsteps, she pledged Delta Sigma Theta. (A most dedicated Soror, her participation included serving as president of the Montclair chapter from 1982 to 1986.) She went on to secure a Masters in Business Administration and a Juris Doctor both from Rutgers University.
Professionally, she worked on Wall Street, spent many years at IBM and, ultimately, worked until retirement as a sales representative for the educational publisher McGraw-Hill.
But it was for the people of the Township of Montclair that Sandy dedicated so much of her life. She served two terms on the Township Council, was a member of the local YWCA, a campaigner for the YMCA, a president of the local chapter of the NAACP, a Board Member and current Secretary of the Union Montclair Housing Corporation which included serving the tenants of the Mathew G. Carter Apartments for over 20 years.
Sandy is predeceased by her parents, Roxie Lang (nee Myatt) and James Lang, and her brother James Andrew Lang. She is survived by her nieces: Annette and Andrea Lang, Wallena Gould, her nephews: James (Tariq) Lang, Jr., Saladin Lang, and Doug Wilson as well as many grand nieces and nephews.
