Michael Wayne Ellis

Michael Wayne Ellis, a resident of Montclair, New Jersey, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 29, 2026.

Michael Wayne Ellis was born June 6, 1958 to the late Marvin and Marcia Ellis. He was baptized at an early age at St. Paul’s Baptist Church of Montclair, where his mother was faithful in servant leadership.

Mike spent his childhood and adolescent years growing up in towns Orange and Montclair, New Jersey with his sister Marcia Green and late brother Mark Ellis. He attended Essex Catholic High School in East Orange, finishing his high school education at Montclair High School, graduating class of 1976. He furthered his education at Lincoln University before enlisting in the military. Mike served in the U.S. Air Force in Panama, Grenada, and stateside. While in service, he married his first wife, Miriam Brooks. Together they had daughters Stephanie and Carmen. During his time in the U.S. Air Force he was awarded several certificates and honors.

After his time in the U.S. military, he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, LaVerne Williams. To their union was born Michael Wayne Ellis II, affectionately known as Mikee. Mike used his charismatic and magnetic personality in his professional life, working mainly as a sales associate at companies such as Circuit City, P.C. Richard & Son, Bed Bath & Beyond, and more. After his professional career, he devoted his life to raising and nurturing his last child, Mikee.

Mike cherished spending time with his loved ones, playing & watching sports, grilling in the summertime, and caring for his many dogs. He loved music of all genres, often freestyling on his keyboard and electric guitar. He had a deep appreciation for fashion, which manifested in his stylish outfits and colorful sport’s team attire. Some of his favorite teams included the New York Knicks and New York Giants. Mike was a beloved neighbor and enjoyed being a helping hand by shoveling snow, mowing lawns, and helping others whenever he was able to do so.

Mike leaves to treasure his memory, a dedicated wife of 27 years, LaVerne; his children Stephanie (Chris) Lawshe, Carmen (Mike) Galeano, Mikee Ellis; six grandsons and one granddaughter; and his sister Marcia (John) Green; and a host of family and friends. He was preceded by his brother Mark Ellis; and parents Marvin and Marcia Ellis
