Maud also known as, Virginia, Ma-Ginia, Grandma and Mrs. Abernathy attended Lunenburg High School and accepted Christ at a young age as the daughter of a Deacon and a member of West Hill Baptist Church in Victoria, Virginia. She was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and friend. She was married to the late Edward Irving Abernathy of Kenbridge, Virginia on January 16, 1947. This marital union of 55 years bore 7 children (Edward Jr., Raymond, Virginia, Sarah, Mellilo, Effie and Theodore). Virginia and Edward moved the family from Kenbridge, Virginia to 30 William Street in Montclair, NJ and then eventually moving to 49 Elmwood Avenue in Montclair, NJ. She and the children all attended Union Baptist Church where all seven children were baptized and attended Sunday School. She loved Union Baptist Church and her church friends. This family of nine loved being together on holidays, car traveled family vacations and gathering on Sunday afternoons for unplanned family dinners at the house with Virginia’s sensational cooking.
Virginia loved to sit and read the bible at her leisure and reciting bible passages during general conversation with her children to get her points across in praising and disciplining their actions. Most of the discussion with the children was about living a good and honest life, while working hard every day. Her love of flowers is something several of her children have grown accustomed to in their lives as well as keeping a clean house. If you ever walked by the house, you would have witnessed her gardening and watering her beautiful flowers in the spring and summer months. She enjoyed their beauty while sitting on her front porch or in the backyard. One of her favorite sayings was “Give me my flowers while I am living so I can enjoy them today.”
Virginia leaves to cherish her memories, her loving children, Raymond (wife-Starlin), Virginia, Sarah, Mellilo, Effie Bartow (husband-Allan), Theodore (wife-Rene’), Tibet Abernathy- daughter in-law, 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 surviving sisters Alice H.
