Mary Veal Obituary

Mary Veal was born on January 22, 1932 in Paterson, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Walter and Emily Curvy. She departed this life on Wednesday, April 29,2020.

Mary was raised in Paterson, New Jersey where she attended the local schools including Eastside High School. On January 6, 1951 she married Benjamin Veal, who was a neighborhood friend. After marrying Ben and Mary moved to California with their infant son, Benjamin Jr. While they in California, a daughter, Karen, was born. Mary started her career working for California Bell Telephone Company. After living in California for 7 years, the family returned to New Jersey. They lived in Montclair, Summit, and eventually settled in Verona. A second daughter, Kathy, was born in 1962, during the time they lived in Summit.

While raising her three children, Mary worked at New Jersey Bell Telephone Company in Newark, Madison, and East Orange. She held various positions during her time at NJ Bell.  Mary ended her career as a supervisor in the Data Processing department. Mary retired from Bell Atlantic in 1987 and spent time with the Pioneers, a volunteer organization made up of retirees from Bell Atlantic who collected and made helpful items for people in need. She also enjoyed ushering, participating in arts and crafts classes, worshiping and traveling with her friends at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montclair, New Jersey. Mary volunteered at the Verona Service League for several years. 

Completing the crosswords puzzle in several papers daily was a daily exercise for her memory. Mary enjoyed walking in Verona Park her husband Ben. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She especially had a great time attending her grandson’s football and basketball games. She was always very supportive of her grandsons, and encourage them to do their best. She enjoyed traveling with her entire family. Mary leaves with many fond memories .


She was predeceased by her husband Benjamin, daughter Kathy, sisters Alma, Dorothy, Helen, Betty, brothers Donald and George.
Those left to cherish her love of family are; son Benjamin Veal Jr; daughter in law Debra, daughter Karen, son in law David and grandson Justin and Dac, sisters Joan Rembert ,Shirley Speights and brother George Curvy and a host of family members and friends.
