Mark Bright Obituary

Mark D. Bright
Was born 1955 the fifth of seven children born to Joan and James Bright. Mark spent most of his life in Montclair, NJ and graduated from Montclair High School in 1974 where he was on the wrestling team and in a band for several years. He attended Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn and graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor’s in Fine Art. Mark was a comic book and storyboard artist
best known for penciling the Marvel Comics Iron man Story Armor Wars, and two Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn miniseries for DC Comics among others.

Mark’s interest in art/comics came from family visits to his maternal Grandmother’s who was a hairdresser. She had a small home hair salon and it was there that he discovered the comic
books that she used to buy for her customer’s children to read while they waited for their mother’s hair to be done. After graduating from Pratt Institute, for four years Mark did
consulting work two or three days a week for two years while working on a painting portfolio as well as making bi-monthly submissions to DC and Marvel comics. As Mark would say, “The last
two of these years Mom and dad took turns at ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop’ checking on my actual desire and ability to earn a living as an artist.” However, in 1982 just as he was about to “toss in
the towel on the whole deal,” he started to get work at Marvel Comics, a couple of toy companies and at Berkley Books.

After 20 years in American comic books, Mark moved into storyboarding for commercials, and live-action television and feature films, notably including M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last
Airbender. He occasionally returned to comics, including Transformers Spotlight issue for IDW Publishing. Mark was not only an accomplished artist, he was affectionate as a son, brother, uncle, and
brother-in-law, but he truly stood out for his clever wit and dry humor.”

On March 27, 2024 Mark passed away peacefully at the age of 68. Mark was pre-deceased by his mother and father, Joan and James, and three siblings: Gwendolyn, Shelley, and James.
