Marie Odette Pierre Louis, a woman of deep faith, quiet strength, and boundless love. She was born on July 29, 1936, in Hinche, Haiti, where she spent her early years surrounded by the warmth of a close-knit family. From a young age, her sharp intellect and wisdom stood out, often astonishing those around her. Though small in stature, she carried a presence far greater than her 4-foot-11 frame.
Tragedy struck early in Marie’s life. By the age of 25, she had endured the unimaginable loss of all her siblings and both parents, and her grief deepened by the passing of her mother and father just 15 days apart. For years, she carried this sorrow in her heart, but she often credited her late husband, Francois, as the one who helped her heal. “He wiped my tears away,” she would say, a testament to their profound love.
Marie and Francois met in Port-au-Prince and married in 1966, just eight months after their paths first crossed. Together, they built a life rooted in love, respect, and shared dreams. Their partnership extended beyond their home as they combined their efforts in the garment industry and worked tirelessly to build a future for their children. In 1973, Marie supported her husband in pursuit of greater opportunities as he immigrated to the United States while she remained in Haiti to care for their children. Despite the distance, she ensured her home remained filled with the same familial love and support she had known in her childhood. She created a nurturing and disciplined home. Her house was not just a place to live but a gathering space for family and friends.
Marie and her children finally joined Francois in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1984, where she would spend the next 41 years of her life. She believed in hard work and perseverance, qualities she carried into various jobs after immigrating. For a decade, she worked in retail with the TJX organization before retiring at the age of 70.
Even in retirement, Marie remained active, dedicating much of her time to her faith. She found great joy in attending daily Mass, participating in prayer meetings, and checking in on family and friends with heartfelt phone calls and visits.
Her kitchen was the heart of her home—always filled with laughter, the warmth of shared meals, and the comfort of her presence. Anyone who walked through her doors knew they were welcome, whether for a plate of her delicious cooking or simply to sit and talk.
To those who knew her, Marie was a gentle yet formidable force. She carried herself gracefully, took great pride in her family, and cherished her maiden and married names. Her love extended beyond her children and grandchildren to the many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, neighbors, and friends she touched.
Marie was predeceased by her husband, Francois, in 2016. She is survived by her beloved children, Emilio Pierre Louis, Rony Pierre Louis, Urielle Benders, and Chantale Baker; her eight cherished grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and an extended family of relatives and dear friends.
She made a difference in every life she touched. Many of the children who knew her have said she was like a second mother, a guiding light, and a source of endless love.
Marie will be deeply missed, but her legacy of faith, family, and kindness will remain forever in our hearts.
