Deacon Lloyd M. Shears, Jr., a native of Montclair, New Jersey, was born on February 28,1946, to the union of Deacon Lloyd M. Shears, Sr. and Deaconess Fannie Shears. His parents were the inspiration for his desire to serve others. Deacon Shears’ journey at Union Baptist Church began as a young child attending Sunday School and serving on the Junior Usher Board. He joined the church and was baptized in 1951. The legacy of service continued when he was ordained as a Deacon by Rev. Dr. Walter L. Parrish III, on May 16, 2004. In addition to the Diaconate Ministry, he also served on the Pulpit Aid, Senior Usher Board, Male Chorus, Men’s Ministry, Love Food Pantry, Transportation and Outreach ministries and prepared food for Vacation Bible School and many other ministry meetings and events.
Lloyd received his formal education in the Montclair Public Schools and after graduating from Montclair High School in 1964, he continued his education at Rutgers University, studying advertising. His career in the travel industry began in 1969 at Eastern Airlines. He recorded more than 20 years there and 40 in the industry with Kiwi International Airlines, Continental Airlines, Travel Ventures and American Express in the World Trade Center Complex. In various roles throughout his career, he coordinated ground and air travel arrangements for thousands of individuals and corporations, including many national leaders and dignitaries from across the globe.
Lloyd, or Bunny, as he is affectionately known by many, was always ready to assist with any project, whether it be at home, on the job or at church. His passion, however, was culinary art. His signature dishes were always delicious and he would tell you that he watched his parents, when he could barely see over the counter, as they prepared breakfast and lunch in their diner on Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair. His passion for cooking led him to volunteer annually with the Million Man Montclair organization to prepare the food for hundreds of Thanksgiving meals that were distributed to those in need throughout Essex County.
Lloyd was so inspired to cook that when he was advised to slow his pace at work in New York City after surviving the September 11th attack on Manhattan in 2001, he opened his own restaurant in Bloomfield. “Bunny’s” was the name…of course! People traveled from near and far to order his delicious “Bunny Burgers,” fried fish and macaroni and cheese.
Deacon Shears was always committed to serving God. His faith grew stronger every day and he loved to read his bible each morning. Two of his favorite scriptures were Philippians 4:4 and 4:13. Deacon Shears encouraged his family, friends and those he met to be kind and loving to everyone…because that is what the Lord expects of us. Lloyd was a humble man. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family unconditionally.
Deacon Lloyd M. Shears, Jr. departed this life on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Sr. and Fannie Shears and his son Lloyd M. Shears III. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Joyce Robinson Shears; sister, Mollie Dunlap; children, Franklynn ‘Frankie’ Shears (Judea) and Lauren Shears Agnew (Brian); grandchildren, Brooke and Monet; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again, rejoice. Philippians 4:4 (NIV)
I can do all things through Him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
