John David Wood, a loving, thoughtful, and hardworking man of faith, went home to be with the Lord after a long illness on Friday, August 23, 2024.
The second oldest of five sons, John was born on June 10, 1943, to the late Edwin and Lola Wood. He grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, where he attended the local public schools. During his time at Montclair High School, he discovered his love for sports, excelling in both football and baseball. He wasn’t just a talented player but also a passionate advocate for the lessons sports could teach—teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Besides sports, he loved singing, participating in school musicals, and later singing with his cousins and church choir.
After graduating from high school, John attended Montclair State College for a time before beginning his career at IBM in 1963. His strong work ethic and keen mind quickly made him a valuable team member. He enjoyed ten years with the company, working alongside his childhood best friend, Otis Boggs, and two of his brothers, Eddie and Bill Wood. In 1973, John transitioned from the corporate world to join the family business, Wood Caterers, in the South End of Montclair. He worked alongside his father (until his passing) and for a short time, his brother Eddie. Later he was joined by his youngest brother, Larry, who managed the ice cream side of the business, Wood’s Dairyland. Together, they turned the business into a community cornerstone, known for its exceptional service and dedication to quality. John ran the business with the same passion and commitment he brought to everything he did, until a devastating fire forced him into early retirement.
During happier times, the catering business participated in a community softball league, where cousins and friends joined the team. They played for nearly ten years and became league champions two years in a row in 1979 and 1980.
Above all, John was defined by his love for his family. He was a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart, the late Diane Wood, with whom he shared 49 wonderful years of marriage and raised five daughters—Michele, Lori, Jodi, Lyndsey, and Ashlee. John and Diane were active members of St. Paul Baptist Church, serving on the Deacon Board, singing in the Gospel Choir, and participating in various ministries. They instilled a strong sense of faith in their daughters, who were also active in ministry.
John took great pride in his home, always ensuring it was adorned with beautiful flowers. He loved spending time with his extended family and friends, often hosting gatherings where good food, music, and pool time were highlights.
In his later years, John was fortunate to find love again with his companion, Brenda McDougal.
He leaves to mourn his passing his five daughters: Michele, Lori, Jodi, Lyndsey, and Ashlee; two sons-in-law, John Page and Doni Young, and future son-in-law, Daniel Brown; nine grandchildren: John, Justin, Brandon, Isaiah, Kylah, Kendyll, Joshua, Channing, and Avery; three great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Sarai, and Syre; three brothers: Eddie, Bill, and Larry; one sister-in-law, Sheila; his companion, Brenda; and a host of family and friends.
John’s life was one of service, sacrifice, and above all, love. Whether in ministry, work, or family, John led by example, always putting others before himself. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and an unshakeable commitment to his loved ones.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love, prayers and support during this difficult time. Words cannot express their deep gratitude for the many acts of kindness that have been extended. In remembrance of John’s commitment to community service, monetary donations can be made in his honor.
Donations will be shared with AAngels NJ scholarship fund.
