Joan Crawford Tyler who was born November 21, 1930, departed this life on Friday, October 11, 2019. She was the eldest daughter of Maryland and Edna Harris of Macon, North Carolina.
Joan began her formal education in Littleton, North Carolina, where she and her sister, Gloria primarily lived with their maternal grandparents on their farm. Their mom, Edna moved to New Jersey to increase her
opportunities for employment. Although, it was a hard life at times, the girls enjoyed helping on the farm and had fond memories and lots of stories to tell about their experiences living on the farm.
As the girls became teenagers, their mom relocated them to Montclair, NJ, where they lived and attended Montclair High School. Joan later attended secretarial school.
Joan soon met Charles “Buddy” Tyler, also from Montclair. Buddy was drafted into the army, where he held the position as a military police officer. Upon returning home, Joan and Buddy were married and continued to live in Montclair.
In 1956, they were blessed to welcome their first child Ronald (deceased). Within a few years, they moved to East Orange, New Jersey where their daughter Jean was born. After spending several years as a homemaker, Joan had a desire to return to work. She was employed with several insurance companies as a secretary. She later retired from Benisch Insurance Company in East Orange, NJ.
The family enjoyed spending quality time together, which included many family vacations, day trips and golf outings. After retirement, Joan and Buddy enjoyed vacationing with friends and family and soon golf became a regular recreational activity. After multiple golf visits to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, they decided to relocate and retire to this vacation destination in 1995. Later that year, Buddy passed away in November. Despite the devastating loss, Joan gradually began developing new friendships and continued to play golf and travel. She also enjoyed going to the beach, sewing, reading and word searches. Joan later developed an interest in painting at the nearby senior center. Painting became a big part of her life, she even created an art room in her home and sold two of her paintings at an art show. She also really enjoyed spending quality time with her grandson,Tyler. You could frequently find them having a very competitive game of chinese checkers.
