Joan Hendricks was born on March 9, 1934, to the late Alfred Dublin and Maude Speede. She was the sister of Jean Ricketts and the late Clenel Redman. At an early age, she became a single parent but ultimately, catered to the needs of her children. Joan passed away, peacefully, at her home on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at the age of 85, after a battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends during her transition.
Joan was born in Ann's Grove Village, Guyana, South America. She received her Elementary education from the Victoria Roman Catholic School, and her High School education from Tutorial High School, Georgetown, Guyana. After the death of her father, Alfred, she and her sister accompanied their mother to Bartica to continue managing his business and it was there that she met and married her husband, the late Alvin Hendricks, and started their family. Their union bore four children. Later, after divorcing her late husband, she met Carlton Christian and their union resulted in the birth of a son. Joan took her God-given responsibility seriously, so she worked assiduously to train her children properly. While she was in her native land of Guyana, she was an astute entrepreneur creating her business ventures and was also a trained professional beautician. She emigrated to the United States in 1988 and was not afraid to take risks and to embrace change, so she continued her education, and worked in the Health Care sector for eighteen years before retiring. She also became a licensed Unity teacher and served at the Montclair Unity for over thirty years. This attests to her faith in God and her strongly entrenched religious beliefs.
Joan's signature qualities were her quick-wittedness, compassion, care, concern, love, selflessness, and supportiveness. She was very forthright in her speech though she always was well-meaning in her intentions. Joan cared very deeply for fellow humans and had the gift of charisma, bringing out the best in others through her positivity. Joan acquired exceedingly acute listening skills and used these to assist others in successfully navigating obstacles which they confronted in their lives by willingly imparting her knowledge and skills, honed from practical experience, training and wisdom from God. She demonstrated tremendous patience and understanding. She was humble, easy to communicate with and never lost her common touch. Joan loved all of her family members, relatives and friends profoundly. She was a voracious reader of religious and spiritual materials and poems from which she gained enlightenment. She acquired her extensive collection of books which she read daily. Joan enjoyed cooking and baking and many people enjoyed her delicious cuisine. She was also very adept at keeping a tastefully decorated home with beautiful houseplants. These are the signature qualities that Joan will be remembered for. She had an indelible influence on her family, friends and community and lived in a manner that we can all emulate. Joan may not be physically here with us, but she will live on in our memories. She will be sadly missed by everyone whose lives she touched.
