Jefferson Bernard Scotland, affectionately known as Scottie or Jewo was born on February 13th, 1955, the third of eleven children born to Camelia (nee Alfred) and Augustin Scotland, in the Caribbean Island of Dominica, with family roots from the communities of Castle Bruce and St. Joseph. Jefferson spent his younger days happily growing up as part of a large family consisting of six boys and five girls and extended family. He attended & graduated from Dominica Grammar School. Thereafter he traveled to Trinidad in pursuit of higher education and later on to Europe where he gained his Master of Science from the University of Reading in December 1994. In his adult life on the Island Jefferson worked at various organizations including Nehemiah Comprehensive High School, Clico Insurance and WINBAN. Jefferson was passionate about the prominent agricultural industry, the main lively hood on the island of Dominica and served as the Executive Officer of the Banana Growers Association.
On July 25th, 1981, Jefferson married his wife Carol Scotland (nee Solomon), they had three beautiful children, Sari, Jefferson Jr and Shanna. They continued to share over 43 years of marriage until his passing, on December 20th, 2024, with her and his children by his side.
Jefferson was a supportive husband, father and grandfather. He was an amazing dad; he was a great provider and taught us the importance of hard work and dedication. He had a drive that inspired many. He taught us that where there’s a will, there’s a way. He lived his life fearlessly, always the life of any party with tremendous compassion for others. He was a natural leader and soared in leadership roles, always seeking to be of service to others. He was the head boy of his graduating class at the Dominica Grammar School. He was a cricket and soccer enthusiast-a member of the celtic club and he managed a soccer team in Dominica for many years. He also had a great radio personality, and many looked forward to hearing his exciting voice when he carried sports commentaries on his beloved Island of Dominica. To say his joy was contagious is an understatement.
In 2001 Jefferson migrated to the USA with his family, eventually settled in Miramar, FL. He pursed careers in Academics and Homeland Security. Due to the onset of his illness of Parkinson’s in 2012 he retired as a Boarder and Control Customs Officer at Miami International Airport.
In 2015 Jefferson, together with his wife, Carol relocated to New Jersey. He was able to enjoy the joys of grandparenting where his caring spirit was always felt. For many years, even during his illness, he was able to enjoy the company of his wife, children and grandchildren and loved his wife’s cooking and baking, often waiting up for meals and guessing what they were from the aroma.
