Janet E. (Garrison) Jones

  Janet Elizabeth Garrison Jones was born May 21, 1933 to Gladys and George Carter Garrison Sr. of Montclair, New Jersey younger sister to Lavater and Gloria Garrison and older sister to George C. Garrison Jr. 

      As a young girl, she was baptized at St. Paul’s Baptist Church then located on Hartley Street in Montclair, New Jersey. She was a life-long member of St. Paul’s and remained active until her health declined.

      Janet attended Montclair Public Schools and graduated from Montclair High School in 1951. She received her BS from Jersey City State College and continued her education at NYU to pursue a degree in nursing from the Belleville School of Nursing where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She also secured a masters degree from Kean University in 1985.

      Janet met the late Albert W. Jones while visiting her sister, Gloria Garrison Carper, in West Virginia and the two married soon after settling down in Montclair where she worked as a visiting nurse. Together they raised their children, Scott and Andrea, and continued to be active members of St. Paul’s.

     Janet would later broaden her career at Mountainside Hospital where she served as an RN in the labor and delivery unit for many years before moving  to the Montclair Public School system. She served as the school nurse at Glenfield Middle School for many years making rounds to Edgemont, Bradford and briefly, Northeast elementary schools before she retired after 30 years of service.

     Janet was a bowler with the league at Belclair Lanes; a member of the Senior Choir of St. Paul’s; and a member of the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. where she was a Delta Dear. 

     A sweet spirit and family woman, Janet was known to make “Hot Rolls” like no other that would just melt in your mouth and never hesitated to make dozens and dozens to give to friends and neighbors.  

     Janet leaves behind to mourn her two children Scott and Andrea; Grandson Brandon Simms; nieces Gladys Carper and Terri Sherrod (Clifford); Renetta Tull (Damon); George C. Garrison III (Tia); D’Vell Garrison Sr. (Latrease); Micah Garrison (Brandy); great niece Kelli R. Batch (Charles), great nephews Christopher D. Jackson (LaQwanza), Timothy B. Jackson (Kaysha), Eric L. Jackson and a host of great, great nieces and nephews.
