James A. Summers, born July 1, 1932 in Glen Ridge New Jersey to the late Alexander and Sarah Summers, he passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 5, 2024, at the age of 92. James lived a life marked by dedication, love, and service, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
A proud graduate of Montclair High School, Class of 1952, James went on to serve his country honorably in the Army. His time in the military was a testament to his commitment and leadership, qualities that would define his later work as a recreation specialist. In this role, James touched the lives of many, fostering community spirit and enhancing the well-being of those he served.
James’s most cherished role was that of a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In 1966 he married Elizabeth “Betty” Mitchell, according to Betty she reeled him in from the basketball court, it was love at first sight and they shared 58 wonderful years of love and companionship. Together, they raised two daughters, Jill and Jamie who were his pride and joy. It is still up for debate who is the number one daughter but we all know the truth.
James was a pillar of strength, kindness, and generosity. His commitment to his family and community was unwavering, and his spirit of service and love left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passion for fostering community connections was evident in everything he did from Job Corps, Grant Ave Community Center, YMCA’s, Essex County Youth House, Orange Recreation and Orange Football programs; his impact will be felt for generations to come.
James is preceded in death by his sisters Elizabeth Crewes and Nadine Swan.
James is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Elizabeth (Betty); daughters Jill E. Summers-Phillips and Jamie B. Summers-Johnson; Son in laws Isaac Johnson and Matthew Phillips ; his loving grandchildren Isaac James Johnson Jr., Mitchell Alexander Johnson, Chantel Christina Brewster, Isaiah Smith, his siblings Ernest L. Summers, Mark Robertson, Hazel Lucas; God children Gerald (Jerry) Samuels Jr, Christopher J.Reynolds and James A. Summers along with a host of other family and friends who will remember him with deep affection and respect.
