Gloria S Harris

Gloria Swanson Harris (“Glo”) was born on March 24, 1932 in Macon, North Carolina. In the 1940’s, Gloria and her older sister, Joan Tyler (deceased) relocated to Montclair, NJ, where they both attended Montclair High School. It took them a while to adjust to suburban life after having grown up on the farm with the chickens, cows and pigs.
Given Gloria's interest in history, in 1970, she was very excited and proud to have been able to purchase an old historical home from the early 1900’s in Montclair, NJ. It brought her great joy to continue to research the history of this old home.
After graduating from Montclair High School, Gloria began her long accomplished career in the field of Nursing. Gloria received her AA degree from the School of Nursing at The Harrison Martland Medical Center in Newark, NJ. She then obtained her BS degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ in 1969. Gloria continued her education by receiving her RN Licensure and obtaining her MA degree at New York University in NYC in 1974. Gloria also attended Teachers College at Columbia University in NYC in 1981. Gloria’s love of Nursing led her to an esteemed career in Nursing Education. She began teaching at Saint Vincent’s Nursing School, Felician College and William Paterson University. Gloria loved to share her wealth of knowledge and Nursing experience. She was also a member of the National Honor Society of Nursing. After retiring from her Nursing career, Gloria began studying Landscape Design and while in her 60’s, she
became a Master Gardener. Her love of plants and design inspired her to develop a small Landscape Design business. She designed, developed and maintained many properties throughout the Montclair area.
Gloria had many interests and talents. In addition to home restoration, she also enjoyed interior design, photography, antiquing, furniture refinishing and she loved to travel the
world.
Gloria departed this life peacefully on Sunday, March 5, 2024, while in the care of a local Assisted Living Facility. She is survived by a sister, Patricia Henderson, a niece,
Jean Tyler, a nephew, Brian Henderson, a great nephew, Tyler Williams and a host of other family and friends. She will be dearly missed.
