Dorothy L. Thompson nee Nutall affectionately known as Dot, & Aunt Dottie, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Samuel and Naomi (nee Peace) Nutall. As a young child, she was raised in Oxford, North Carolina and attended Oxford Public School System graduating from Mary Potter High School.
She was baptized at an early age at the New Light Baptist Church in Oxford, NC where she started her Christian journey.
In 1955 Dorothy moved to NJ for a better employment opportunity. She was employed at Overbrook Psychiatric Hospital now known as Essex County Rehabilitation Psychiatric Hospital in Cedar Grove, NJ retiring after 35 years of service. It was here that Dorothy met the love of her of life Thomas Thompson Jr. whom she was married to for 53 years until his death in 2021. The couple resided in Irvington, NJ. She would join the Messiah Baptist Church, East Orange, under the leadership of the late Rev. Harry H. Batts.
Upon retirement, Dorothy and Tom, moved to Rahway, NJ in 1992 and joined the Second Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. James W. Ealey the same year. She became an active member in the Flower Ministry, Senior Usher Board, and the Women’s Guild. Until her health no longer allowed her, she attended Bible Study and Wednesday Prayer services.
In 1992 Dorothy received a certificate of appreciation from the United States Surgeon General, Antonia C. Novella, and a plague from former First Lady Barbara Bush for participating in the Nation-Wide Organ and Tissue Donor Program. She donated her daughter Patricia Oakley’s organs as a “Gift of Life” so someone else may have a joyful life.
In 1995, she received a certificate from the Kerygma Program (A Biblical Study Course Discovering the Bible), and a Special Recognition Certificate in 2005 from the Women’s Guild.
Dorothy always stated that she helps and God keeps on blessing me over and over again. Let the life I live and the things I do speak for me. As I travel life’s journey, it shall not be in vain as long as I can help someone along the way.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Thomas, daughter, Patricia Oakley, and all her siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Kenneth Oakley, Rahway, grandson, David Turner, Newark, goddaughter, Vernita Raymond, Rahway, sister-in-law Anna Willis, Newark, great granddaughter Reniqua Williams, great great grandson Amiri Williams, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends.
