Obituary

Dorothy H. McRae was born January 22, 1925, in Hillsboro, Texas, the last of Ellen Jones and Anthony Hilliard’s four children, In April 1954, she married Thomas McRae with whom she had three children: Ellen Coretta, Paul Hilliard and Lawrence (aka Larry) David. 

Dorothy was educated in the Hillsboro Texas Public school and graduated from Langston University in Langston Oklahoma. 

Dorothy lived some of her life in Oakland, California and spent the last 54 years in Montclair, New Jersey. She attended the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Oakland and St Marks United Methodist Church in Montclair. She was an active member of both churches working with the youth and United Methodist Women groups and serve as treasurer of St Marks for many years. In Oakland, she was a member of the Eastern Star Regina Chapter 67 and was their Matron in 1966-1967. 

She loved playing bridge and was in a bridge club for over 40 years. 

Dorothy had a career as a bookkeeper and accountant. She worked for Cheseboro accounting firm in Los Angeles. When the family moved to Oakland, California, she worked for the City of Oakland from 1958 – 1967. From 1968 to her retirement in 1980 she worked for Main Hurdman. 

On October 21, 2021, God called Dorothy home to be with her husband, Thomas. Dorothy is survived by her children: Ellen (Dennis Burris), Paul McRae (Constance) and Lawrence (Sharon McRae); her grandchildren Anieya, Anthony, Victoria, Theodora, Lauren and Rory; as well as many nephews, nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.
