Diane McCabe may have had a love of art and design, which her friends at New Haven’s Hillhouse High, where she graduated in 1956, knew, but began her career, partly out of necessity, as a medical technician, at Yale school of medicine, beginning in 1960. Born to Ira and Lillian Davey, of New Haven, in 1938, it wasn’t until after she graduated from Southern Connecticut State College, in 1966, that she would find her true calling. Before leaving New Haven for New Jersey, with her husband, Eugene McCabe of New Haven, and son, she proudly joined thousands in 1963’s March on Washington, on DC’s mall. Soon, the family moved themselves, along with beloved Siamese cat, Tashi, from Connecticut to New Jersey in 1967, where she became a school teacher for Montclair Public Schools, until 1980, when a desire to become a psychologist drew her away. She had previously worked for four years in Seton Hall’s Upward Bound program, counseling young people. In between schooling, she enjoyed creating her own art, in many mediums, joking that she really liked some of it. With little money, and a love of antique furniture, she became a frequent visitor to garage sales during the 1970s, picking up articles she refinished for her home. Skills in restoring the items she learned through books and experience. She also took the time, when she uncovered them, to pick up collectibles for her son. Continuing her education, she earned her M.A. at Montclair State University in 1978. By 1990, she received her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Rutgers University. Even after retiring, when not traveling or enjoying the well-earned relaxation of Cape Cod, she continued to process cases for the State of New Jersey. She is survived by her son, Kevin.
