Dana was born in Harlem, New York to the late Samuel and Louise Polk. After the family moved to Newark, New Jersey, Dana attended Avon Avenue Elementary School, Clinton Place Middle School, and South Side High School. Following his high school graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army serving for two years, including one year in Vietnam. “Those we love don’t go away.
They walk beside us every day…unseen, unheard, but always near;
still loved, still missed, and very dear.”
