Beloved mother, faithful servant of our Lord and Savior, and seamstress, Cereta Myrie (aka Aunt Sadie) succumbed to her battle with cancer on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the age of 87. Born in Comfort, Manchester, her journey from Jamaica brought her to the United States where she and former husband, Magnus Myrie raised their children in Montclair, NJ. She is survived by her children: Clive, Donna, Junior, Maurice and Diahanne, and her grandchildren: Clive II and Jordan, as well as extended family and friends. The long-time resident of Elmwood Avenue was well known in the community for her hard work, outgoing spirit and willingness to help others. Mrs. Myrie had survived a prior 1986 breast cancer diagnosis.
While employed by Annin & Company in Verona, Annin was featured (accompanied by her photo) in a NJ Star Ledger article regarding high demand for US flags. After retiring from Annin in 2002, she devoted her time to caring for those she loved, and was an active member of The New Lighthouse Church (within walking distance of her home) and continued to bless others with her gift of sewing.
Visitors to her home were usually gifted one of her shopping or laundry bags. Over the years, numerous persons have had their choice of wedding, graduation, and other attire designed, sewed or altered by her. She was extremely joyful to have been able to sew for her grandson Clive’s wedding to Priscilla, last October. Up to very recently, she designed and created fashionable facemasks for family and friends to use during the Covid pandemic, before falling ill. Passersby would often see her on her front porch, behind her trusted Singer sewing machine for hours. In the last days of her hospital stay, she spoke to friends and family to give them some advance on what she believed was coming. We shall miss her terribly.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at a future date.
Arrangements are in the loving care of the Martin’s Funeral Home, 48 Elm Street, Montclair NJ.
Special Tribute
The Day The Lord has Made
By Diahanne
We are gathered here today
To share our joy and give Him thanks and praise
We will eat, drink and
laugh all day
For this is the day
The Lord has made
He will not forsake us,
so we say
When you’re feeling down
Do not be dismayed
For at the end of our days
We’ll Remember not Farewell
But this is the day
The Lord has made
To send flowers
to the family or plant a tree
in memory of Cereta M Myrie, please visit our floral store.
