Catherine Firebrace Obituary

Catherine Firebrace, a beloved caretaker and guardian angel to generations of children, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2024, at the age of 92. Her life was a testament to selfless dedication, boundless love, and unwavering compassion for the countless young lives she touched over her remarkable career spanning more than four decades.
Born on October 10, 1931, at Mountainside Hospital in Glenridge, NJ, Catherine was the daughter of John and Katheryn Simpson. As a young woman she was baptized at Saint Paul Baptist Church, sang in the choir, and was a member of BYP (Baptist Young People). Catherine graduated Montclair High School in 1950 and two years later married her high school sweetheart, the late James A. Firebrace Jr.


Catherine began her professional career at RCA in Harrison, NJ. After the birth of her own children, Catherine discovered her passion for nurturing children and pursued a career in childcare with wholehearted devotion. Her warmth and nurturing spirit earned her the love and respect of every child under her care. Throughout her career, Catherine touched the lives of countless families in Montclair, becoming a cherished figure in the community. Her commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for children was unmatched, and her impact extended far beyond the walls of her home. She will be fondly remembered by the countless children whose lives she enriched and the families who entrusted her with their most precious treasures. Outside of her professional life, Catherine enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Some of her favorite activities were reading, traveling, and bowling. She was a member of the Harpers Bowling League and Saint Claver Bowling League- where she won many awards and trophies.

Catherine and her husband traveled all over the world. Ultimately their family joined their annual trips to the Caribbean, making it a family tradition.
Catherine is predeceased by her husband, James A. Firebrace Jr., and brother, John Walter Simpson.

She is survived by her loving children, Renae Thompson, James Firebrace III (Patricia), and Carol Dumont (Luciano). She leaves behind a legacy of grandchildren; Stephanie Montague-Pearman, Edward Montague, Tara Thomason (John), Marc Thompson (Melany), Todd Thompson (Amaryllis), Amanda Firebrace, James Firebrace IV (Felicia), and Sophia Dumont, 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great granddaughters.


Catherine’s legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew her. May she rest in peace, knowing that her kindness made a lasting impact on the hearts and lives of so many.
