Betty Jean Harper left us suddenly and safely entered into the beautiful gates of heaven with the Lord on September 30, 2021. A sixty-six-year resident of Montclair, New Jersey, Betty Jean Harper was the loving daughter of the late Carrie B. Perry. Born March 6, 1937 in Louisburg, North Carolina.Betty gave her life to the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Lettuce Hall Baptist Church in North Carolina. She attended Franklin County Training School and Spalding High School where she graduated in 1955.Upon graduation from High School Betty moved to New Jersey and was employed for a short while with RCA; soon after she began employment at Overlook Hospital in Cedar Grove, New Jersey where she worked for thirty years until her retirement.
Betty Jean met the love of her life Lonnie Joe Harper while working for her uncle George Perry at Perry’s Cleaners on Bloomfield Ave, in Montclair. They were married in 1958 at the family home 85 Lincoln Street, Montclair, New Jersey and stayed united in marriage for fifty-one years until her husband’s passing in 2009.
With an abiding commitment to the Lord Betty walked in her faith from Louisburg North Carolina to Montclair New Jersey. In the sixties she joined St. Paul Baptist Church in Montclair. She was an active member of the St. Paul Missionary Society where she would join in bible study and worship service for the seniors at Arbor Glen. She also served with the Two Fish Five Loaves Ministry and assisted with sending meals to seniors and sick and shut-in. Her faith walk continued with service toward others. Annually she would have service with the women at Walter Hoven Home for ladies. She was also a dedicated member of noon day bible study and Little Lad Food Ministry where she served meals to her church family. With a love for her neighbors Betty would go to the “Do Drop In” to enjoy lunch and activities. She also looked forward to the annual Pre- Mother’s Day Luncheon with her niece Lesly.
Betty had a vivacious smile, warm spirit and a zest for life. Her love first and foremost was for family. There are many pictures and memories of the family celebrating holidays with laughter and love. She adored her sons and supported them in every facet of life.
She is preceded in death by her mother Carrie, three brothers, Bobby, Billy and Garland Earp and sister Thelma Earp Washington.
She leaves to cherish her memory beloved sons Dwayne P. Harper, Glen S. Harper(Kelly) both of Montclair, New Jersey, daughter Janise Collins, North Carolina. Two sisters Doris Earp, East Orange, NJ, Judy Stanley, Sims, NC. One Sister-in-law Lillian Harper (California). Faithful niece Lesly Robyn Harper-Devereaux,(Les) Candace Harper, “Trixie,” beloved friends Elma, Linda, Tammy, Eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
