Gilmer Artfield McKinley Bristol, age 70, passed away on February 7, 2023, at his home in Orange, NJ.
Fondly known as Art, Gilmer spent his formative years and much of his adult life in his native community of Marigot, Commonwealth of Dominica, until he emigrated to the U.S. to join his family in 1997.
The second of seven children of Amy Latitia Bristol and McCloud M. Alton Bristol, Art will be remembered for his compassion, sharp sense of humor, love of music and fun-loving nature.
A hard-working husband, father, brother, uncle and friend to all who knew him, Art excelled in his professional life, having spent 40 plus years as a firefighter and corporate security professional. Art’s mantra was ‘do good to everyone’, a sentiment impressed upon him by his late grandmother, Darda.
Art was predeceased by his parents, McCloud and Latitia Bristol; his older brother, Oliver, as well as his fourth son, Gilmer Junior. He is survived by his wife, Anthia, former wife Leonora, his children, Gildon, Herman, Gledé, Keesher, Wes, Keola, Toreda, Alyssa and their families; his siblings John, Jonathan, Sharon, Lois, Annmarie, Curtilis and numerous relatives including nieces and nephews, cousins (The family of Oliver N. Phillip and Yvonne James), colleagues and friends.
Art will be remembered at a Memorial Service in celebration of his life at Martin’s Home For Service, Inc., 48 Elm Street, Montclair, NJ 07042, on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 12:30 p.m.
